I was born into a working class family in the West Midlands, looking back into my family tree I have found miners, factory workers and even Romany gypsies, so I don’t know where my love of the Arts actually comes from!
I can remember my Dad listening to jazz music and my Mom always wished she had been a dancer. I can also remember weekend’s sat on my Nan or Grandad’s knee and watching old black and white movies and singing along to Judy Garland and Jessie Matthews.
My Mom tells me I used to emulate the actresses I had seen in the old movies, give me a table cloth and some lippy and I would become Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind! Apparently, when I started to freestyle dance to the music which played over the ‘test card’ on the telly, Mom knew she had to do something with me and my talents!
I started at Cadwaladr School of Dance in Shropshire at the tender age of three!
I had a desire and drive to succeed, but in Shropshire it was hard to find anyone who could advise me. However, thanks to a handful of wonderful people who helped me and after many years of dance exams, singing and acting lessons I gained a place at Paul McCartney’s prestigious academy LIPA, and was one of the first graduates from that terrific school.
Since graduating I have worked extensively in theatre both in the West End, and in Repertory theatres such as the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Theatre Royal Stratford East.
My most recent acting job was the International tour of Mamma Mia where I donned platform boots and lycra singing Abba in some of the world’s most beautiful cities! As well as being in the company I understudied the lead roles of Tanya and Donna.
My theatre credits also include: Billy Elliot original cast, (Lesley & understudied and played the role of Billy’s dead mam,) directed by Stephen Daldry at the Victoria Palace, London. Oliver! (Strawberry seller & understudied and played the role of Mrs Sowberry, understudy Mrs Bedwin) at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. Spend Spend Spend (understudy Young Viv) National Tour. Sammy (Paula Wayne) Theatre Royal Stratford East & UK tour. Operas: Die Tote Stadt at The Royal Opera House. I have also performed at Buckingham Palace for the Queen, members of the Royal family, the prime minister & heads of state for the G8 summit.
My television credits include: Heartbeat, Casualty, Children In Need, Top of the Pops, Blue Peter and the Apple commercial,‘I’m a PC’ alongside Mitchell & Webb.
I can also be heard on the original cast recording of Billy Elliot.
Believe me, I know how hard it can be to find advice in Shropshire and the West Midlands. That’s why I want to start offering my help.
I want to be able to help point you in the right direction and show you what is available when beginning a career in the acting, dancing or singing industries. Real life isn’t like the ‘X Factor’ or ‘How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?’
I am here to give aspiring young people in this region somewhere to go for practical help and advice both about Drama Schools, Colleges and the first steps in the business.
